Did the Japanese Occupation change the way people viewed Singapore ?

" Singapore as home"

Singapore became a prosperous trading port under the rule of British before Japanese Occupation. The local born treated Singapore as home and they were proud to be British subject. They also got influenced by British and adopted western ways of dressing, custom and pastimes . They received English education and was able to work in the British Colonial Civil service. On the other hand , the immigrants that came to Singapore were here for jobs and trading opportunities and only planned to stay for a short period of time . An example of it was Sun Yat Sen collected fund to remove Qing dynasty in China. When the Japanese occupied Singapore, the people got together to resist the Japanese. There were two main anti-Japanese resistance movements in Singapore, namely the Force 136 and the Malayan people's Anti-Japanese Army ( MPAJA) . They collected information about the Japanese and organised attacks. The Japanese got the people together and unite to fight against the Japanese. The immigrants that stayed in Singapore during the occupation treated Singapore as home after the occupation and wanted it to be independent as they lost respect for the British . The people in Singapore demanded for local political involvement and citizenship.
Therefore, people views on "Singapore as home" became stronger after Japanese occupation .
